Soroti
Nestled in the heart of Uganda’s Eastern Region, Soroti City stands as the vibrant commercial, administrative, and cultural hub of the Teso sub-region. Elevated to city status in 2019, Soroti serves as the capital of Soroti District and a key gateway to northeastern Uganda, including connections to the Karamoja region.
The name “Soroti” derives from the Ateso language, meaning “to assemble” or “to gather,” reflecting the city’s longstanding role as a meeting point for trade, communities, and ideas among the Iteso people—the dominant ethnic group in the area—and other neighboring communities.
Soroti’s history traces back to the early 20th century. Its growth began around 1904 when British colonial administrators established posts in the region, with Soroti becoming the permanent headquarters of the Teso area by 1912. It developed as a railway and trading center, attracting diverse influences—including a notable Indian community before the 1970s—that shaped its architecture, markets, and multicultural character. Today, remnants of colonial-era buildings, old railway structures, and a blend of Hindu temples, mosques, and local shops tell the story of its rich, layered past.
According to the 2024 National Population and Housing Census, Soroti City has a population of approximately 134,199 residents, making it one of Uganda’s growing urban centers. Situated at an elevation of about 1,130 meters (3,710 feet), the city enjoys a landscape of rolling hills, savanna plains, wetlands, and iconic granite outcrops.
The local economy thrives on agriculture, with staple crops like millet, cassava, sorghum, potatoes, beans, simsim (sesame), sunflower, and vegetables (tomatoes, onions, cabbage) dominating. Cotton remains an important cash crop, while vibrant markets buzz with trade in produce, crafts, and everyday goods. Soroti also supports transport, small businesses, education (home to Soroti University), and emerging services, positioning it as the economic engine for the broader Teso area.
